Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Ylia, a Spanish producer and sound designer based in Málaga. As a DJ, Ylia’s sets are fast-paced and ravey,1 but on her solo records since 2020, she’s pursued a more ambient sound. Her compositions are filled with manifold musical ideas; synth tracks accompany a wide range of sounds and instrumentation. Her second album, Ame Agaru, was released earlier this month on ’s Balmat Records and features guests on flute, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, and more. The record, whose Japanese title roughly means “the rain lifts,”2 is a somber meditation made after the deaths of several family members. We’re also playing her first album, Dulce Rendición from 2020, which is more whimsical and almost entirely electronic.
