William Basinski
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to William Basinski, an American ambient musician. We’ve featured Basinski a couple times before. Born in Houston in the ‘50s, Basinski studied jazz clarinet and sax, later adopting tape decks as a primary instrument.1 He’s perhaps best known for his Disintegration Loops, which capture the sound of old tape loops playing and degrading as they repeat. But first we’re playing his collaboration with British artist Janek Schaefer, “…on reflection.” The LP came out this past April and consists of airy solo piano and some field recordings.
