Thomas Köner
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Thomas Köner, a German multimedia artist from Bochum. Köner picked up instruments at a young age, and fell into video editing after studying composition and piano at conservatory.1 In the early ‘90s, inspired by observations of the sublime in nature, such as Norwegian glaciers, they released a series of drone compositions.2 On Teimo from 1992, Köner used inventive recording techniques to capture tones in suspended animation, such as floating microphones to gongs underwater.3 On Permafrost from 1993, they play even sparser drone music, with tracks that remind you that music is ultimately just moving air.
