Space
Good morning. We’re off Monday and Tuesday – back on Wednesday.
It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Space, a French disco-electronic band. Formed in 1977 by 24-year-old Monaco-born composer Didier Marouani, Space would publish a chart-topping disco single and three LPs in its first year of existence.1 Then in 1978, citing disagreements with the group’s producer, Marouani left the band. The dance music created during this flash of insight over ‘77-’78 is infectiously enthusiastic and strangely contemporary-sounding. This is most evident on their debut record, Magic Fly, whose titular track was that international hit. In 2009, The Best Of was released, and its 14 tracks show their Kraftwerk-like incorporation technological themes into titles, instrumentation, and (occasional) lyrics.
