Good morning.
It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Siete Catorce, a Mexican dance music producer and DJ based in Mexico City. He was born in Mexicali and grew up in Oakland, CA, before returning to Mexico around age 14 when his mother was deported.1 He started making electronic music reflecting cumbia rhythms, hip-hop loops, and local club vibes. He finds “a futuristic middle ground between Latin American dance styles and computer music abstraction” as Resident Advisor put it. We’re playing two records: Cruda from 2022 and Saludos from 2014.
Cruda - Siete Catorce (40m, occasional chopped vocal samples)
Spotify / Apple Music / YouTube Music / Amazon Music / Bandcamp / Tidal
Saludos - Siete Catorce (30m, sampled vocals on track 2)
Spotify / Apple Music / YouTube Music / Amazon Music / Bandcamp / Tidal
Have a glorious weekend.
Don't usually work well with the EDM-type choices but "Cruda", at least, clicks for me, don't know why. It is really sparse and spacious - cavernous, even. Energetic with just the right level of attention drawn to it.
