Good morning.
It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Shinichi Atobe, a Japanese electronic music producer from Saitama. We’ve recommended him twice before, but we’re featuring him today off the back of ’s comprehensive and illuminating interview with Atobe. We previously wrote, “Since 2001, he’s released music on cult underground labels around the world, never quite revealing much about the who, when, or why behind the records.” It turns out, as Tone Glow learned, this is because no one bothered to ask. We learn from their conversation that Atobe was born in 1971 in Saitama; he loved Led Zeppelin and The Smiths in high school, got into electronic music via Orbital, Basic Channel, and Carl Craig, started making techno at age 27, and much more.1 We’re playing two of our favorite records of his: the classic Heat from 2018 and From the Heart, It’s a Start, A Work of Art from 2017.

Have a really good weekend.
Another highlight from the interview: “Q: Do you remember how you felt when Hard Wax said they wanted to release your music? A: I was just happy.”
