Good morning.
It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Satoshi Tomiie, a Japanese electronic music producer based in New York. Growing up, he told Iconic Underground Magazine, “I didn’t really have an interest in learning music or practicing music until I was like 13 or 14 when one of my friends from school bought one of the old Yamaha monophonic synthesizers.” From there he quickly became adept at keys and by the ‘90s was touring with Ryuichi Sakamoto. Tomiie has put out three solo LPs. The last of the three, Magic Hour, came out last week. It’s mostly dubby ambient techno, “danceable, yet contemplative” as Bandcamp commenter DAS VILLAIN wrote. Its predecessor, New Day from 2015, incorporates more deep house influences, harkening back to the ‘90s with its TR-909 hats and acid bass synths.
