Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Marina Baranova, a Ukrainian pianist and composer from Kharkiv. She started playing piano at age five and moved to Hanover (where she currently resides) at 19 to study at Hanover University of Music, Drama, and Media.1 From her mother she absorbed classical influences and from her father jazz influences. We’re first playing her new record from February, Cosmic Calendar, whose twelve pieces for piano and orchestra score the origin of the universe. We’re also playing her 2016 record, Hypersuites, on which she adapts baroque pieces by composers such as Bach and Handel and infuses jazz and pop into them.
