Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Manzanita y Su Conjunto, a Peruvian band that formed in Lima in the late 1960s. Berardo ‘Manzanita’ Hernández, the band’s leader, learned guitar while growing up outside Trujillo up the coast and quickly mastered the fast-paced “picadito” style of playing.1 The band formed just as Peruvian cumbia was picking up and signed with the label Infopesa.2 Several decades later, in 2017, Infopesa put out a 22-track compilation of the band’s ebullient instrumentals. We’re also playing Arre Caballito, a record from 1970 that was reissued in 2019.
