Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Kelly Moran, an American pianist and composer from Long Island. We first recommended her about five years ago. She studied music in Michigan and California, then moved to New York City where she played in bands including Voice Coils alongside Mitski.1 Moran’s 2018 debut LP, Ultraviolet, was a mind-bending collection of prepared piano pieces. We’re re-upping that record, whose pads and arpeggios we previously praised as “beautiful, mystical.” Moran just released her first LP since then, which is called Moves in the Field. The new album can be categorized as contemporary classical and minimalist, but with these effects and dubbing, she is doing something that defies categories.
