Joanna Brouk
Good morning. We’re off next week.
Today we’re listening to Joanna Brouk, an American electronic artist from St. Louis, Missouri. We first featured her in March 2020. Born in 1949, she studied creative writing and music at UC Berkeley, and her original music was inspired by the rhythm and flow of verse.1 “It was embarrassing for me to say I was a composer in the beginning,” she told Aquarium Drunkard, “because I just sat down and listened and would start to play what I heard.” We’re first playing The Space Between from 1981, which opens with her 20-minute magnum opus. We’re also playing the compilation Hearing Music, released in 2016 by the label Numero Group.
