Jackie Davis
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Jackie Davis, an American jazz organist from Jacksonville, Florida. Born in 1920 to a musical family, Davis taught himself to play on his grandmother’s piano and was in a band by age 8.1 He gravitated toward the organ, specifically the Hammond, an electric organ that came out in 1935.2 Davis proved himself on the piano before bringing the organ sound to jazz, releasing several solo records on Capitol and Warner Brothers. We’re playing two of those today: Easy Does It from 1963 (including the unmissable tracks “Sleepy Time Gal” and “Midnight Sun”) as well as Most Happy Hammond from 1958.
