Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Grand River, a Dutch-Italian composer and producer based in Berlin. Early on she was exposed to minimalist and ambient composers such as “Meredith Monk, Jean-Michel Jarre, Laurie Spiegel and Pauline Oliveros,” as she told Patterns of Perception. In her own music, Grand River makes rhythmic and tonal experiments, mixing synths (Buchla Easel, Yamaha DX7, Korg MS-20) with acoustic instruments (upright piano, cello, acoustic guitar).1 We’re first playing her debut LP, Pineapple, from 2018, which focuses on synth arpeggios and pads. We’re then playing her third and latest album, All Above, which came out in February of this year. “When I go into the studio and start composing for an album,” she told CLOT Magazine, “it’s an externalisation of what I’m feeling at that moment, everything that has influenced me before and what’s around me; it’s free composition.”
