Golden Brown
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Golden Brown, an instrumental music project from multi-instrumentalist Stefan Beck, who’s based in Colorado. Beck combines guitars and synths to create ambient Americana, or as his label put it, “cosmic-inflected Appalachian folk stylings.”1 Since 2021 Golden Brown has released three LPs in three years. We’re playing them in chronological order. Gems and Minerals (2021) was composed and recorded during the early days of the pandemic as a way to build a refuge, and it features his wife on cello.2 Luminous (2022) is a guitar-driven record, with complex chord arpeggios, a 1936 aluminum lap steel, and a lot of reverb.3 Weird Choices (2023) is more experimental, as the title suggests, collecting spacey “miniatures” as well as longform pieces.
