Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Claire Deak, an Australian multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Melbourne. Thanks to
for surfacing her work here. Deak studied composition, lectures on the same, and has scored films and TV.1 In October, she released her first solo LP, Sotto Voce, whose starting point was fragments from baroque composers Francesca Caccini (1587-1640) and Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677). Deak constructed original works around these “musical traces”2 and recorded with string accompanists in a 19th century wooden church, a building which she came to view as a contributing instrument in itself.3 We’re also playing The Old Capital from 2020, a collaboration with her partner, multi-instrumentalist and composer Tony Dupé.Sotto Voce - Claire Deak (40m, light backing vocals in the second half)
