Chicago Underground Quartet
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Chicago Underground Quartet, a jazz quartet from you guessed it – Chicago. The quartet was originally formed by guitarist Jeff Parker, trumpeter Rob Mazurek, bassist Noel Kupersmith, and drummer Chad Taylor.1 Their self-titled 2001 debut LP “bridged the gap between Chicago's free jazz and post-rock scenes,” wrote Viking’s Choice at NPR. It’s a Hieronymus Bosch painting of an album: some tracks are math equations, others are cool meditations, and others are panic attacks. We’re also playing their 2020 record, Good Days, which was recorded almost twenty years after its predecessor and features Josh Johnson on bass this time around.2 Some tracks are challenging, others coolly soothing. It’s a very mixed bag, but that’s Chicago for you.
