Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Carlos Niño, a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles. In 1999 he started the Spaceways radio station on KPFK 90.7 FM, dedicated to new age, folk, electronic, and unclassifiable music.1 He then formed Carlos Niño and Friends in the late aughts, a project where he gathers friends to record mostly instrumental jam sessions. He’s put out a number of outstanding records under this banner, showcasing his abilities as a convener of talent and catalyst of profound musical moments. More of the world was exposed to this via André 3000’s recent record New Blue Sun, which featured Niño’s musical direction. We’re playing two of his albums with friends: Extra Presence from 2022 and Flutes, Echoes, It’s All Happening! from 2016. Collaborators include Iasos, Sam Gendel, Laraaji, Madlib, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.
