Bruce Brubaker
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Bruce Brubaker, an American pianist from Des Moines, Iowa. Brubaker studied at Juilliard and applies postmodern concepts to his work, for example treating musical scores as “texts” in themselves.1 He has a special fondness for minimalist composers, whose ostensibly simple repetitions can, in time, reveal deep truths. We’re first playing Inner Cities, Brubaker’s 2003 collection of John Adams and Alvin Curran pieces. We’re also playing his 2015 record Glass Piano, where his interpretations reveal the latent drama in Philip Glass’s refrains.
