Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Bobbi Humphrey, an American jazz flautist from Texas. Humphrey studied classical and jazz flute in high school and college, and upon graduation moved to New York City to play professionally.1 Within weeks she was signed to Blue Note Records, the first woman on the legendary label’s roster.2 We’re first playing her 1971 debut, Flute-In, a straight ahead and uplifting jazz record featuring Idris Muhammad on drums and Lee Morgan on trumpet. We’re following it up with Blacks and Blues from 1973, a fusion record and her breakout hit, which features the occasional vocals.3
