Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Béla Fleck, an American banjo player from New York City. At 15 he was wowed by the fast-paced pluckings of bluegrass duo Flatt & Scruggs.1 Going on fifty years, Fleck has earned renown as a world-class banjo player, collaborating with other virtuosos in jazz (Chick Corea) and contemporary classical (Joshua Bell). We’re playing his new album from May, As We Speak, whose genre-bending recordings feature Zakir Hussain on tabla, Edgar Meyer on bass, and Rakesh Chaurasia on bansuri. We’re also playing Fleck’s Bluegrass Sessions Vol. 2 record from 1999, which is more of a down home bluegrass collection.
