Good morning.
It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Aphex Twin, an electronic musician from Cornwall, UK. Born in 1971, he got involved in the local music scene in the late ‘80s, DJing at free parties there.1 His first, self-released LP, Selected Ambient Works 85-92, compiled outré tracks that, as Kelefa Sanneh put it, “both suggest and preclude the possibility of dancing.”2 Warp Records signed Aphex Twin in 1993, and the next year he released Selected Ambient Works Volume II, whose works are more actually “ambient.” Together, these two records released in the early ‘90s opened people’s minds to the infinite possibility of music created with machines.
