Amanda Whiting
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Amanda Whiting, a Welsh harpist. She studied classical harp for years before switching to jazz, channeling her two major influences Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane.1 A frequent studio collaborator, Whiting has released two LPs of her own on Jazzman Records. After Dark from 2021 consists of mellow harp-led jam sessions with a furtive, nocturnal disposition. Lost in Abstraction from 2022 is a bit more out in the open, gathering additional accompanists and occasionally raising the tempo. Both records feature flute from Brighton’s own Chip Wickham.
